Hittin’ is easy…it’s the zits that drive me crazy!
So the latest, greatest athlete to ever put on a Reds uniform started in centerfield Tuesday & Wednesday night. Jay Bruce, the 21 year old phenom, is 4 for 6 (.667), with 3 walks, 2 doubles, a couple of RBI and a few runs on his resume. Not a bad start for the savior. That being said, I’d like to clarify that Jay Bruce is NOT gonna save the Cincinnati Reds. It’s going to be pitching. And hitting. And defense. From the 9 guys that are on the field. It can’t be all about one guy. That’s the way it is in baseball and this team is no different. Which leads me to last Sunday afternoon’s loss in San Diego.
18 innings were played. The game was just shy of 6 hours long. The Reds basically emptied the bucket as far as personnel went. The only player who didn’t play was the scheduled starter for the game on Tuesday. But here’s where the story really gets good. EVERY pitcher had his cleats on and was ready to go. Everyone wanted to win the game. No one was calling it a day and hanging up their glove early. And THAT is the sign of a good team.
The Cincinnata ballclub lost that game. Seems almost senseless that every possible option was used before finally losing the game, but now the Reds have won 2 in a row at home, making it 9 in a row total…and there is hope. Jay Bruce, Joey Votto, Brandon Phillips, Edwin Encarnacion, Jeff Keppinger, Jerry Hairston, Jr. If you know of any of these players, feel free to stop me. But these guys are hopefully gonna be helping the Reds win a lot of ballgames in the very near future. I can feel it…and it feels really good to finally feel that way about my favorite team in a sport I’m not so crazy about.
So GO REDS! At least until football season starts. Then I figure it will be the Yankees or Red Sox vs somebody from the National League in the World Series in…(when is it played now?) November?
Might as well be us, right?
