Baltimore

Baltimore 2009 105

It took me a while to warm up to Baltimore. For the longest time I found myself there in the winter months when it’s cold and overcast. But through the years, it has slowly warmed up to me and now I have several reasons to enjoy my visits there…with the most obvious being the crabcakes! To be be perfectly honest, I usually stay right near the heart of all the activity near the Harbor. There is shopping and lots of places to eat down there. Plus you have the beauty of the water and the multiple docked ships that are all a part of the tourism of Charm City. There are also many cool museums and a plethora of places to walk to. Here are some pictures of my most recent visits. If I could recommend it, visit during the fall. I realize it’s not “crab season”, but the trees are changing and the cool weather make Baltimore a fantastic place to just hang out and enjoy it’s many charms…

Canoeing, A Castle & Smellyfoot

22 08 2009

What better way to spend the day than to get out into the great outdoors and paddle downstream? So Saturday morning, that’s what we did. My buddy and I threw our kids in car and headed out to Loveland, OH to do a little canoeing. Once we got all settled and the kids A) stopped asking questions & B) got used to the canoe, it went pretty well. And the weather was perfect!  A little overcast and around 70. On our trip, we saw ducks & a crane and some fish and we saw a medieval castle and we even managed to get a glimpse of the famous Sasquatch (or Big Foot, for those of you who don’t know). Sounds too good to be true…right? Well…here are the pictures from our harrowing adventure…

COSI Is Fun For Kids

13 06 2009

Dunno if you ever get to Columbus, OH, but if you do, you should try out COSI…which stands for Center Of Science & Industry…or something to that effect. Anyway…we took our kids there and had a great time! Nice museum and kept the kids busy. Might have to go back sometime. However, they HAVE to bring back the planetarium! I remember when I was a kid and we went there, that was the highlight of the trip for me. Now it’s gone?!?! Stupid COSI…

Buuuut…the kids had fun nevertheless. Here are some photos from our trip!

75 Steps & A Thumbs Up!

12 06 2009

June 2009 037

I like waterparks. I wouldn’t say I’m a waterpark efficianado, but when presented with the option of sitting in my house while guys are climbing all over the place or driving a couple of hours to an indoor water park, I figure the choice is pretty clear. Let’s go swimmin’!

And so we did. We packed up the kiddies and headed north to Columbus to stay the night at the Fort Rapids Indoor Water Park and Hotel. I would love to tell you that it’s the LARGEST INDOOR WATER PARK IN AMERICA!!! But it’s not. And I would love to tell you that it has THE FASTEST WATER SLIDES IN THE STATE!!! But it doesn’t. As a matter of fact, compared to outdoor water parks, this place doesn’t hold up. There isn’t a true swimming pool in the place and it’s actually kind of small. But here’s the appeal of Fort Rapids, and it’s kind of a secret so don’t tell anybody…shhhhh….

There’s nobody there.

That’s right…it’s almost deserted! We arrived around 3pm and swam for 6 hours and there were no lines. There were no thousands of people jammed into a wave pool. There were no screaming kids and adults shoving and frustrating food lines. Nothing! None of those things! As a matter of fact, the only thing I had to wait for were my kids as they got into their swimsuits! From there, it was all easy going and lots of water.

A lazy river, 2 flume rides, racer slides and an awesome waterslide where you drop into darkness and then shoot out into a giant doughnut thing where you circle around 4 or 5 times (I loved that ride!) all highlight the park. For the kids, there is a giant play area with 2 water flumes and an area for children 6 and under. Then there is a  hot tub for adults and some basketball hoops where you can shoot from the pool and…well…that’s kind of it. But all of those things can go a long way when there is no one there! And we definitely made the most of it!

And the greatest feeling of all…after climbing 75 steps to get on one of the waterslides, is to have the lifeguard give you the thumbs up as you arrive at the top of the stairs. That means you are good to go. No wait. And at Fort Rapids in Columbus…we were ALWAYS good to go! Which makes THAT particular water park my FAVORITE WATER PARK IN THE WORLD! For now anyways…

Newport Aquarium

17 05 2009

On Tuesday, I took my daughter and one of her friends to the Newport Aquarium in Newport, KY. It’s one of the premier attractions here in Cincinnati and I would recommend that if you are ever in town, you check it out! It’s a great place for kids, not terribly expensive and I actually find that I learn something new every time I go there! So off we went…

Notes From The Derby

3 05 2009

derby-2007-009

So yeah…I was working the Kentucky Derby this past weekend. ACTUALLY…if we need to clarify…I DIDN’T work the Derby. As a matter of fact, I was halfway home when the Derby started and I listened to it on the radio on the ride home from Louisville! So in that case…I did NOT work The Kentucky Derby. I will, however, be collecting a paycheck for working all of the other races that took place at Churchill Downs on Saturday & Sunday (minus the 2 races following The Derby). So what can I tell you about this weekend? Well…

1. It rained a lot and was cold & periodically crappy.

2.  Jockey Calvin Borel is the man! Riding Rachel Alexandra to a win by 20 1/4 lengths and then taking Mine That Bird (the horse that cost $9 grand and had the worst name in the field!) to a Derby win even though there were other horses that were getting a lot more publicity. Who’s your daddy now?

3. Parking at Churchill Downs is a nightmare. Why anyone without a parking credential would go anywhere near that place amazes me.

4. Kim Kardashian is teenie-tiny and has got much back. She was there with her mom and I didn’t realize…the woman is 5′2″?!?! How does she stay upright???

kim_kardashian_450729a

Aaaaaaand that’s it.

Now for 3 much needed days off with no travel anywhere in sight! YES!!!!!

My New York Trip…He Said

28 04 2009
So Nathalie gave HER version of what happened. So now here is MY version of what REALLY went down. And trust me…it is nowhere near as interesting as what she thinks!

 xxxxxx-050

So I arrived in New York on Wednesday. Kinda overcast and crappy and headed STRAIGHT TO WORK. I didn’t get out til 6pm and from there I went straight out to Times Square to see the lights. Much to my disappointment, the Virgin Megastore has now closed, so I decided to see a Broadway show.

xxxxxx-035

This year, I went to see “Desire Under The Elms” with Carla Gugino & Brian Dennehy (which is a huge difference from last year when I went to see “Spamalot“!). For those of you who don’t know who either actor is, Brian Dennehy has been in film  & television for a while and Ms. Gugino is in “Watchmen”, “Sin City” and quite a few other great films. “Desire” is a serious drama written by Eugene O’Neill in the 1920’s and is about a man, his father, his father’s new wife and a farmhouse. Needless to say, it generates some heat! I couldn’t take a lot of pictures (ushers get real huffy about taking pictures. I have no idea why) but the performances were great and the set was very cool for a minimalistic drama.

xxxxxx-046 xxxxxx-045

From there is was back to my hotel (Le Parker Meriden) for a burger at The Burger Joint, which is tucked in a corner of the hotel lobby behind a giant curtain. I kid you not! Burgers are $7 and as messy as you like it! And they really go great at 11pm just before going to bed. (Not)

xxxxxx-030

On Thursday I hit the gym twice at the hotel. At $10 a day, I figured I might as well get my money out of it. Watched “Signs” and went to bed early.

xxxxxx-060
My room with a view

Friday? Went for a nice long walk AFTER WORK, bought me some deli takeout (Waldorf salad, Cannoli & orange drink!), kicked back and watched “Nick & Norah’s Infinit Playlist” which is set in New York. Called it a night and went to bed.

xxxxxx-072
Now THAT’S a New York dinner!

Saturday? I was working for 13 hours straight in a truck outside Radio City Music Hall. The NFL Network had a 5 hour “Pre-show” before selections took place beginning at 4pm. I got done around 11pm once the first 2 rounds were done. Needless to say, I went straight to bed because…

xxxxxx-054
My place in the truck with a view

Sunday we were back in at work at 7am and didn’t get off the air until 8:30pm. Good times. However after I was done, I went back out to another deli and got a panini, canolli and a tea.

xxxxxx-070
The OTHER deli

Next morning, up at 5:30 to catch an 8am flight back to Cincinnati so I could get to work down at Great American Ball Park to see the Reds lost to the Astros.

So as you can see….I was NOT just goofing around in New York City, Nathalie! I was working my butt off! Oh sure…I was able to Facebook & Twitter throughout the day, but it is EXHAUSTING work bringing all the NFL fans their coverage of such an exciting event such as the NFL Draft! So there!  :-P

My New York Trip…She Said.

28 04 2009

It is true that I spent a few days (5 actually…but who’s counting?) in the Big Apple. I had lots of work to do and very little time to myself. Or…did I? My blogger friend, Facebook confidante and all around amazing photographer, Nathalie With An H, apparently went out and stalked me as I had some fun in the city. But is HER report of my exploits true? Or fabricated? Tell you what…here is HER version of what went down. And a little later, I’ll give you MY version and you decide. Here’s what H says she saw as she tagged along on my little trip…

From Special Envoy in New York, nathalie with an h

The day Alan informed his fellow bloggers that he would be away for a while incommunicado “for work”, I felt something was amiss. For one, Alan has mastered the art of pretending to work, not actually toiling like the rest of us, and second, he seems like a dude with a wireless internet router implanted in his brain: he wordpresses, facebooks, twits, and probably iPhones as well.

I smelled a rat… So I followed him to New York.

After checking in, he left his room like a man on a mission, a man with a purpose. He entered a photo studio in the neighborhood.

at_the_studio

He purchased an 8×10 and several wallet-sized prints of the commemorative image, something he could show his grand-children one day. He was all giddy!

The rest follows….

As he skipped joyfully on the sidewalk, he encountered a fireman coming out of Starbucks. Five minutes later, Alan was riding the bright red shiny fire engine. The firemen seemed tres amused.

riding_the_fire_engine1

That evening, Alan ordered room service – lots of alcohol seemed involved. He invited the tie sale rep from across the hallway to partay with him. I bribed the waiter to take a snapshot of Alan in his hotel room around midnight.

alan_blottoed_in_hotel

So far, no work, right?

The next morning, I was curious to see if Alan would at least pretend to work a little. He left very early… carrying a mysterious plastic bag and hailed a cab. I hailed one too. I could see him moving a lot in the back of his taxi. What was he doing and more importantly, where were we going? He stopped in front of Central Park. It was the Annual Renaissance Festival and…holy moly… Alan was a closet elf!!!

renaissance_fest

I could see now the actual extent of his deception! He stayed at the festival the whole day, encouraging the knights jousting, winking at fair maidens, and playing Drench-a-Wench as if he was in Vegas.

That evening, hotel management kindly requested Alan find another sandbox as he had deeply disturbed the peace the night before and was scaring the guest in his elf outfit.

He packed and headed straight to a youth hostel. It appears that Mr. Alan TV partied hard with the kids, showing them how it’s done!

partayyyyy

For his last day in New York City, the Ashley Dupree obsessed Alan followed the Spitzer family everywhere for three hours.

on_the_move_with_spitz

After lunch (Alan took a lot of time to find a restaurant in NY as we all know how difficult it is to obtain sustenance in the Big Apple), he walked to Broadway and entered a theater. I saw him briefly talk to the director and an exchange of money took place.

Mysterious.

He was then invited on stage for a photo op with the cast of Cats… but not before a little make-up was applied.

posing_with_cat_cast3

Then Alan took the print, squeezed it against his little heart, and wiped a tear of emotion. Who knew Alan was such a big fan? He left directly to the airport, trying to compose himself as someone who had been working very hard for the last three days.

I stayed another night. Just for fun. Not that following that goofball around had not been entertaining… but I needed a little time sans Alan!

That evening, walking around Time Square, I looked up and there it was… A shiny billboard of the Lion King… Starring Alan TV!!!

the_lion_king_time_square1

All this time, I thought the exchange of money with the theater director was about posing with a few felines, but nenni, my friend, nenni! Alan had bought himself an evening of fame, an evening of being the king… for the evening.

So next time Alan writes that he is going somewhere to work, don’t believe him one bit. The dude is probably either attending another Renaissance Festival or buying himself another billboard. Alan is tres misunderstood.

The end…

Walt Disney World: Animal Kingdom

10 04 2009

animal-kingdom-002

Not a lot of time. Disney bus leaves for the airport at 2pm for a 5pm flight, but we have to check out at 11am and we have a few hours to blow. So…let’s go to Animal Kingdom! Basically a large zoo, Steph & I figure we can have a little fun before we go…so we’re off!

 animal-kingdom-0091

Immediately we have a 30 minute wait for the bus. What is up with the Disney transportation system? Anyway, we get there and now we have 2.5 hours. Then we decide we’re gonna ride the Harambe Safari. So that’s at the other end of the park…so we walk and that’s another 30 minutes after getting through security and then bathroom stops and then we get to the line. Then it’s another 30 minute wait in line. And then the ride itself is about 15 minutes. But what a cool ride it is! Here are a few photos…

And that was pretty much our adventure at Animal Kingdom. Once we got off the Safari, we grabbed some cinnamon pecans, stopped in a shop, the kids played some African instruments…

animal-kingdom-074

but then it was a sprint back to the bus and off to the airport! But what a crazy 4 days at Walt Disney World!!! Can’t wait for the next visit! Or…maybe I can?

Nah….I’d go back in a heartbeat…

Walt Disney World: Epcot Center

8 04 2009

epcot-003
Look ma! It’s a giant golfball!

So of all the parks at Disney that we were planning on visiting, Epcot was the one I was most looking forward to! We didn’t go the last time we went to WDW, considering Christopher was only 4 and Ava 2, we just didn’t think they would get it. Well…I’m here to tell ya…at 6 & 4 now, they STILL didn’t get it!

epcot-058
They are faking the smiles…

Oh sure, they liked parts of the park…but overall, World Showcase is a bore for the younger kids and there really wasn’t enought to do there to fill our entire day. But here is a quick review of our experience anyways…

epcot-130

First thing we did was go to the “Mission To Mars” ride. It was a blast! You are basically a crew of 4 people (perfect for us) and you blast off for Mars! You can choose between a more stressful trip (probably more like a roller coaster) or the less stressful. We picked the less stressful and the line was much shorter! Both Christopher and Ava thought it was cool! Being the commander of the ship, I agree.

epcot-0101
The training wheel

epcot-012
My suit! (just kidding…)

From there we went to ride the Figment of Imagination ride. It was cute, with John Cleese as a “Imagineer” and lots of funny scenes. And then we went to see the 3-D film, “Honey, I Shrunk The Audience” and it occured to me that it might be time for Disney to update this movie. I remember seeing it 13 years ago! Can’t they come up with anything new?

epcot-033

From there, we hit the lake and made the rounds at the World Showcase. If you have never been, World Showcase is basically little parts of individual countries. Places such as France, Germany, Italy and more are all represented and are located on a large lake. So you can walk for a bit, stop and shop, get something to eat and drink, whatever. There aren’t a lot of rides (a couple of places have them, but nothing to really talk about), and my kids got pretty bored pretty fast. So we walked…

 epcot-063

And we walked…

epcot-073

And we walked some more…

epcot-1091

And then we stopped and ate in Germany. The food was…different and FINALLY, Snow White made an appearance!

epcot-044

From there we stopped in France and watched a crazy balancing act…

epcot-087

And then took some pictures…

epcot-054

Saw a few more sites…like Japan…

epcot-067

and this plant known as the Conocarpus Erectus…

epcot-068
THAT is one erect plant!

 epcot-082
The Genie signed some autographs

And then we rode a couple more rides (the “Nemo” ride was surprisingly average and “This Spaceship Earth” in the giant golfball was waaaay over the kids’ heads) and then we bolted to go swimming. Overall, not the greatest experience. I’m pretty sure I was asked “Can we go swimming?” at least 500 times. At least. And so finally I caved. The wait at the premier attraction, “Soaring”, was over 2 hours to wait, so maybe next time! And that was that.

 epcot-124
The Nemo ride could have been better

Tomorrow…a 2 hour run through Animal Kingdom! And we get a close encounter with a wild animal! Not for the squeamish…or is it? :-)

epcot-075

Walt Disney World: Hollywood Studios

7 04 2009

hollywood-disney-122

I wouldn’t say that Disney’s Hollywood Studios is the best “movie” theme park in Orlando (Universal looks WAY cooler!), however it does offer some really fun things to do and for smaller kids, it might be the better of the 2 parks. We went on Thursday and immediately took a left hand turn to go to the Star Wars themed part of the park. Why, you ask? Well…you must not have a 6-year old son if you are asking “why?” because…well…Star Wars is really freakin’ cool! That’s why!

hollywood-disney-019

hollywood-disney-026

hollywood-disney-027

And what’s even cooler is that YOU get to train to be a Jedi right there in front of the Star Tours ride! And what’s even cooler than that is that you get to battle Darth Vader in all his black suit badness!!! How COOL is that?!?! You know what WOULD have been cooler than that? If Christopher had been picked the first time he went to see the training. You see, the Jedi Master only picks a select few to train…so Christopher didn’t get picked the first time. Oooooor the second time. Ooooor the third time. Finally…on the 4th trip, we all were shouting and pointing at him and the Jedi Master deemed him worthy to face the evil that is the Dark Lord. Or maybe it was because at that point we had let him get his face painted and he looked like Lord Sith. Whatever…he finally got in!

hollywood-disney-063
Christopher gets his “training” saber

hollywood-disney-078
His schwartz is as big as yours, Vader!

hollywood-disney-102
The younglings win again!

So battle Vader, Christopher did! And the Force was with him that day. His team of younglings defeated Vader and his stormtroopers and sent them scurrying back to another giant…space station…ball thingie…NEVER to return again!!!

And then we had lunch at a really cool restaurant that was built like an outdoor drive-in movie theater, only it was inside and the food was yummy! Also they show old B-movie trailers while you eat in “cars” parked under the stars. And our waiter was funny and actually ripped my $50 that I asked him to split into smaller bills (for a tip), only he thought I wanted him to rip it into…ah…nevermind.

hollywood-disney-042
I LOVED the old trailers!

hollywood-disney-047
The kids loved the waiter!

hollywood-disney-045
And for some reason, this woman loves me…

Anyway, we also hit the new American Idol Experience which was super cool! Except when the host comes out…and he’s NOT Ryan Seacrest and the judges AREN’T Paula & Randy & Simon. Instead, they have standins who do a decent job and they actually have contestants compete for tickets to get to the front of the line at any location for the next trial runs for the real AI! The set was awesome and it really was fun watching it all happen in real life…even if it wasn’t really the real deal. The only bad part of the whole thing? Rampaging teenage girls about crushing my daughter as they herded past her to get in the front row. Stupid teenage girls.

hollywood-disney-115

Other highlights included The Great Movie Ride with animatronic movie scenes such as “The Wizard of Oz” & “Aliens” (Ava didn’t like that part) and we liked that Star Tours so much that we actually DID ride it a 2nd time after Ava asked to “do it again”! And we let Christopher buy his own lightsaber that had 2 sabers! One on each end! And it is about 6 feet long! Wow! THAT was really cool!

hollywood-disney-127
Putting the saber together

Overall, a great day! Then on the way back, we got off the bus at the wrong stop and had to walk an extra 15 minutes back to our hotel room. Stupid bus system. So bedtime that night? 11pm. Ugh…

Tomorrow…EPCOT Center. And boy, was THAT a lot o’ walkin’…

Walt Disney World: The Magic Kingdom

6 04 2009

walt-disney-world-218

Ahhhh…the world of the Mouse. Where the fun never ends and the smiling faces are everywhere! And today was our day to experience the madness…er…magic! So much to do, so little time…so let’s get started…

walt-disney-world-191
Got ’em right where I want ‘em…

Right out of the gate, Christopher was in a mood. I love my son, but he is trying to become a little man a little too quickly. Gotta put a stop to that…right? Anyway, his mood didn’t go away until a little after 4pm…so we had THAT going for us. And we had an appointment for Ava at the Bippity Boppity Boutique.

I don’t know if you remember THIS blog about Ava’s friend Kate getting HER makeover there, but it was now Ava’s turn, and she really enjoyed it! She got dressed up like Jasmine (not her favorite princess, but she liked the outfit…so that’s the way we went!) and paraded around Disney all day with her hair and makeup all pretty! Glitter everywhere! She was quite the site! And all the other princesses were jealous! Oooor…they thought she looked like a stripper. One or the other…

Christopher & I went to visit the Haunted Mansion while Ava was getting her makeover. At first he was scared, but midway through the ride he proclaimed “This is AWESOME!” But immediately after we got off the ride, we headed straight to “It’s A Small World” to flush out any bad dreams. HA!

walt-disney-world-223

Some of the other highlights of the day include the Mickey’s PhilharMagic 3-D movie, The new Monsters, Inc. Comedy Show, the Disney electric-light parade, the fireworks and dining at the Crystal Palace with Pooh and his pals!

We also got to see almost ALL of the princesses! Ava & Jasmine got to be good friends as we stood out of the pouring rain for about 20 minutes. And then our visit with Ariel was full of laughs as Ariel called Christopher “Aboo” and talked about antioxidents in bananas (don’t ask). Anyway, all of the princesses were a joy but one has to wonder…where the hell is Snow White???

A few lowlights of our day (minus the Christopher being a butt part) was the line at Peter Pan’s Flight (if you go, use your FastPass folks! This line is a ballbuster!) and the raingods playing havok with our early afternoon. But other than that…it was a day worth remembering!

Vacation time! And the kids didn’t know. Yes…that’s right…we didn’t tell the kids. There were 2 reasons for this…1) We wanted it to be a surprise. And 2) We didn’t want to have to answer “When are we going to Disney” every 10 minutes for the preceeding 2 months.

Anyway, the kids were totally surprised! We had told them they were taking me to the airport to go to work and once we got there, Steph handed them some goodie bags with sunglasses and stuff and away we went!

For once the plane ride was an easy experience. No delays, no hassle. The way it should be. Nicely done Delta! Once we arrived in Orlando, we took the Disney bus over to our hotel…New Orleans Riverside!

Last time, we stayed at one of the “kiddie” hotels here in Disney. This time, Steph upgraded (I say Steph because she planned almost all of this. I was just too busy and it gave her something fun to do!) and we went with a little nicer hotel. And what was nicer? Well…the pool was heated, the room was slightly bigger (with a fridge) and our room was as far from anything as you can possibly get. And that includes the lobby, food, the pool and the luggage dropoff point. But more on that later! For now…this was a much nicer hotel and we really liked it!

Once we got settled, we hit the pool for the rest of the afternoon and then decided to head over to Downtown Disney for some dinner. Needless to say, so did everyone else. If you enjoy crowds and getting knocked around, then THIS is the place for you! With all kinds of stores and places to eat (with an hour wait minimum), this place gives new meaning to the word “chaos”.

After an hour of swimming upstream, our names were called at the latest dining experience, “T-Rex”. The place reminds me of “Rainforest Cafe”, except with louder creatures…namely dinosaurs. And lots of them! Once we got seated, it was non-stop entertainment with roaring stegolasaurs and triceratops and lightning sound effects and such. Very cool! And the food wasn’t bad either! Just be aware…it IS expensive! And it wasn’t covered on our Disney dining plan. So there was something I didn’t expect…

Fist bump & BOOM!

After a large meal and a boat trip back to our hotel, we eventually got to bed around 10:30. The kids were still hoppin’, but me & mom were about to drop! So tomorrow…Walt Disney World!

A Trip To The Mouse House (A Father’s Lament)

Pooh on you!

Sunny Florida. A wonderful trip to see Mickey and all his friends in the warm sunshine. Life is all good. Right? Well…of course it is! However…and I need to tread gently here…I have to say, as a father and husband who loves his family very much, a vacation to Walt Disney World is really not a whole lot of fun for the parent people.

This isn’t a stretch for most parents, right? I mean, I’m not the only horrible parent out there who thinks this, right? ‘Cause if I am…I’m gonna feel like a major ass-munch. But let me go on record, before I get into the meat of this blog, that I DID have fun with my family in Florida. And there were lots of laughs! And there were some great memories! However…I got issues. So in no particular order…here they are…

  • People are freakin’  rude as hell at WDW. I mean, at one point, my wife and daughter were almost run over by a pack of teenage girls at the American Idol Experience! Seriously? And not an “excuse me” or “sorry” was ever uttered by anyone except for 3 people (that I remember).
  • The bus schedule sucks. We waited at least 35 minutes 4 times for a bus to either come by our hotel (New Orleans Riverside) or to pick us up from the park. Why is that?
  • Where the hell did all the characters go? Last time we were at the park there was one around every corner! This time? Ummm…nothin’. Unless you go pay a small fortune for a meal where the characters visit your table (we did 2 of them)…then you can’t get a bite down because it’s one photo moment after another! Yeesh…
  • The Florida sunshine? Not so much. It rained pretty much every day except the day we left. And that day it was beautiful! Yay!
  • What is with all the crap at WDW? Everywhere you look there is all this crap at eye level so the kids can touch and grab and possibly break. Tell you what…here’s what I think about the “You break it, you buy it” rule…YOU put it within a 4-year old’s reach, you can bite me. ‘Nuff said.
  • And lastly…is there ANYTHING as annoying as THIS…?

“Can we go swim? I’m tired. Can I go pee? I have to pee. I really have to pee. Can we ride that again? High five. Down low. Too slow! Can we go swim? I want to go back and swim. Can I buy that? That is COOL! Can YOU buy that for me? It’s hot. Can we go swim? I don’t like this ride. Can we get off? I don’t like princesses. I don’t want to put my arm around her. I’m embarrassed. I have to go pee…again. Can I go splash in the fountain? I’m hungry. I’m thirsty. Can we get a snack? I want ice cream. I don’t. I want to go to the pool. Yay, it’s raining! Can we go swim? Daaaaaaaad…are you listening to me? “

“Alan! Answer your kids!”

Repeat 578 times.

Ok…that’s out. Now…on to better memories and pictures!!!

Indianapolis

The World War Memorial is BIG!

When you think of “happening” cities, I can’t imagine that Indianapolis comes to mind. I know I would never think of this middle American city as being a cool city. But I got news for ya…the Circle City IS a very cool city.

dsc05522

I have been to Indy several times in the last few months and I have to tell you, except for a few businesses closing a little too early for my liking, Indy is easily one of the most accessible cities that I have ever been too! It has everything you need as a visitor all right downtown. Nightlife, restaurants, sports arenas, a mall, a theater, you name it, Indy has it.

dsc05472

With a brand new football stadium and a quality basketball arena, Indy can brag that it has two of the more people-friendly arenas in the country. And with this being the site for an upcoming Super Bowl, a Women’s Final Four and a Men’s Final Four, it also has THAT going for it!

But Indy isn’t just a sports city. It’s been built up primarily for conventions. With the flat landscape, it’s easy to walk around downtown and see the sights. In the heart of the city is monument circle. While traffic flows around it, the Soldiers & Sailors Monument stands magestically.

Only slightly smaller than the Statue of Liberty (by 15 feet), this amazing structure is a great way to exercise (over 330 steps to the top!) and houses the great Colonel Eli Lilly Civil War Museum in the basement.

There is a long strip of national monuments here called the Indiana War Memorial Plaza Historical District. The largest being the World War Memorial. It almost seems out of place here, but this monument was built back in 1965 and is a sight to see!

As for the rest of the city? Well….there are restaurants galore. One of the more famous watering holes is The Slippery Noodle, which has been around since who knows when (actually 1850) and is a great place if ya got the blues. St. Elmo’s is a popular steak joint that gets a lot of press, with its delicious steaks, shrimp cocktails and wine selection (I hear the wine cellar is very impressive and houses a bottle of wine dating back to the early 1900’s). And I personally enjoy the sushi at Sushi On The Rocks and the fish & chips and Strongbow cider at Irish pub, Claddagh.

Claddagh…for the Strongbow!

Like I said, Indy also has the Circle Center mall that includes a movie theater, so brownie points go to ANY city that has a movie house within walking distance! And it has this super-sweet comic store that has hundreds of comic book titles (I bought “Watchmen” there. Can’t wait to read it!).

dsc05481

All in all, I really love coming to Indianapolis. It’s an easy city to like! Of all the places I’ve been, I would say it is definitely in my Top 5 favorite cities to visit AND it might even be the best city in the country as far as being able to enjoy a good night out without having to get in your car!
