Going with the flow, I’ve decided to start a new blog post entitled “What The Heck…”. This will give me a chance to sound off on things that I find to be ridiculous, stupid or just something that I’m not connecting with.
The first “What The Heck…” is gonna deal with a Hollywood megastar. He’s been in some of the greatest movies of the modern era, and he is, by today’s standards, one of the best actors in the business. However, that being said, I’m gonna go out on a limb and say this about Al Pacino…if he doesn’t get it going here soon, he’s gonna lose me as a fan.
So I’m watching this new movie of his called “88 Minutes”. I haven’t watched the whole thing yet, but I’m not sure I want to. Here’s the deal about this movie and just about everything he’s been in since the 80’s. He plays a psychologist. He’s troubled. He’s trying to solve a murder. He’s sleeping with women who are half his age. What the heck is going on???
Don’t get me wrong, I love me a good murder mystery. And the idea of this film sounded somewhat engaging. But c’mon already! There is a reason this movie was released overseas before being dropped on the U.S. Because this movie is gonna get critically railed!
Enough is enough! I could go into his entire career and go a little overboard with this, but I’m just gonna give you a link and let you check it out. In the 1970’s he was in “Dog Day Afternoon”, “The Godfather I & II”, “Serpico”, “…And Justice For All”. All great films! Then in 1983 he made “Scarface”. Probably the movie he’ll go down in history for. From there it gets sketchy.
You got “Dick Tracy”. You got ” The Godfather Part III” (which I have never seen. So shoot me!), “Glengary Glen Ross” was a nice, short roll for him. “Scent of a Woman”? Yeesh. And he was nominated for that movie. Can you say “make-up call”? And then from there he has basically been playing the same character that he’s been playing for 20 years.
I really want to like Al Pacino. He’s been in some great flicks. But he’s gonna have to pick it up a notch. “Ocean’s 13”? “Devil’s Advocate”? Okay…I actually liked “Devils Advocate”, but whatever. And the scourge of his resume…”Simone”? Yikes. And now this “88 Minutes” ain’t making me want to shell out my money to rush out to his next flick.
Either way, I like me some Al from time to time. I just don’t love what he’s doing right now. What the heck is up with that?
