My heart has just stopped…
Pittsburgh. The Steel City. Home of Carnegie Mellon University, Myron Cope (may he rest in peace), Mr. Rogers (may he also rest in peace) and The RoethlisBurger!
No…not Ben Roethlisberger, the quarterback of the Steelers. He’s actually from Findlay, Ohio. He’s a transplant to Pittsburgh. I’m talking THE RoethlisBurger! The sandwich of choice at Peppi’s Old Tyme Sandwich Shoppe on 12 Smithfield Street near Heinz Field. If you are manly (or womanly…no discrimination here!) enough to tackle this monster of a sandwich, it’s basically a mix of sausage, hamburger, cheese, mayonnaise, onions and an egg.
Yes…I said an egg.
And it’s HUGE! It’s basically a sub but really, really piled full of all of the stuff mentioned above. And no way can you finish it! Well…you CAN finish it (several of my co-workers did), but you can bet you’ll pay for it later. Just the thought of the sheer massiveness of this sandwich is enough to make my stomach quiver (which it now is). It’s a lot to digest and I am concerned that it could get ugly later. Right now I am just trying to make it through the rest of my day without falling asleep.
Anyway…it is delicious…and filling…and really, really good for you! (Not) And it comes at the great price of only $7! Consider that Big Ben’s number is #7…this should not be a surprise to anyone. Thankfully he isn’t #34! And for only $7 you can eat for 3 or 4 days, depending on your appetite!
The BIG RoethlisBurger! Give it a try if you’re ever in the North Side of Pittsburgh. Yinz won’t regret it…but your stomach will!
