Still In The Top 5!?!

The Ohio University campus…the calm before the storm

Nestled in the rolling hills of southeastern Ohio is a university. The small town of Athens is home to approximately 20,000 students (that includes graduate school enrollment) in the fall, winter and spring. I imagine about 60 people live there in the summer offseason.

I am a proud graduate of said university. It is a wonderful school. Very small. Very easy to like. Very pretty. But these things are not what it is known for. Ohio University is known for one thing…and that is Halloween.

Every year, on Halloween weekend, every student at every college anywhere in the proximity of Athens, OH, and even some who aren’t anywhere NEAR Ohio, all migrate to celebrate All Hallows Eve. And all of them have one thing on their minds…to get drunk. And they do! They get drunk all over the place! In the dorms, in the streets, on Court Street, in the alleys. And then after the weekend is over, they all go home and we cleaned up the mess. And that was okay…because we did enjoy the party also and don’t mind being the host of a little debauchery for a weekend.

But Ohio University is STILL on the list of the Top 5 Schools That Know How To Party after all these years, and that surprises me. When Halloween originated in the 70’s, the students simply overtook the town. Thye stormed the main street and made a big party out of it. In the late 80’s, the town sanctioned the event, bringing in sponsors and such. So you would have thought that the fun part of storming the main strip would have subsided by now. But apparently it hasn’t!

Well…I went to 2 years of college at Ohio University back in the early 90’s and I have to tell ya…if O.U. is in the Top 5 of partying schools, then there are some pretty lame schools out there. You can’t judge a school on one weekend a year…even if it is the most popular weekend at any school anywhere on the eastern side of the country. It’s ONE WEEKEND! But apparently that is good enough!

What you should know about Ohio University isn’t that it’s a great party school, but that it is a great school to go to to get a great education. It’s a great place to meet people and learn about yourself and have fun in a small town atmosphere. And yes…occasionally we throw a good party. But don’t judge it from that standpoint. Because I went there and I didn’t party every weekend. I don’t know where that reputation comes from. But whatever. A little notoriety goes a long way! So if it’s a party ya want, then come on down on Halloween weekend, because Ohio U. can definately show you a good time! Just make sure you hit the Burrito Buggy after hours and tip the guitar guy singing the extended version of “American Pie”. Because they are just as much a part of Ohio University as Halloween.

But depending on your stomach, one or the other might just give you the same kind of reaction as a night of chuggin’ Budweiser and doing shots! But that’s just all part of the fun…right?

  1. I think you’re just one big party animal! Don’t try to talk your way out of it! Ha!

    Am not.

  2. Its all what you make of it, I went to WVU…a staple on that list…and didn’t find it to be any more party-ish than other universities.

Amen to that! What qualifies as school as a “party school” anyways? Who actually takes a study of this kind of stuff? It’s just silly…

Thanks for this blog. When I heard the whole “top 5 party school” thing on the news, I immediately scratched it off the list of schools Kasey would be allowed to attend five years from now (!). Brigham Young sounded a bit safer. Heck, OSU sounded safer even with all the football riots.

But this blog did a great job of shining a light on the school and putting the whole party rep into perspective.

O.U. is a great school! Don’t let the “party school” moniker keep you from giving it a shot!

Good Heavens, Alan!!! YOUR NIECE will be going to college in 5 (count them…FIVE) YEARS!!! Boy, am I getting old!!!

Safe to say I have no idea what you are talking about…

I think you underestimate the other weekends at that school. While Halloween is certainly what they are known for, they also throw all kinds of big street parties and such on weekends other than Halloween.

Last May I was there for PalmerFest, where there was a street fire that required riot police and tear gas to get people to disperse. So I think OU has many reasons to be #5 on that list other than Halloween.
